Materials:
glass straight-sided votive candle holder
Nori paste
printed rayon paper
Mizuhiki paper cord
extra strong double-sided tape
metallic gold tassel
Chinese coin
strong cement
Steps:
1. Remove any labels from the glass.
2. Measure the circumference of the votive with a strip of paper and cut the printed rayon paper the same circumference of the candle (figure A) and approximately 1 inch longer than the height (figure B).
3. Spread a thin layer of paste onto the wrong side of the printed rayon paper. Wrap the paper around the circumference of the candle, aligning the top edge (figure C). Smooth the paper with your fingers.
4. Cut half-inch slits in the paper at the bottom of the candle and apply paste. Press down one strip at a time on the bottom of the candle (figure D).
5. Smooth more paste over the paper covered candle with your fingers and let dry (figure E).
6. Lay a strip of double-sided tape at the top of the candle and apply Mizuhiki cords (figure F). Trim excess.
7. Finish by attaching a coin and tassel (figure G).
Tips:
- Experiment with different shapes of candles.
- Try making a controlled wrinkled design by moving the paper on the glass while the paste is still wet.
- Tear bits of contrasting papers for a stained-glass effect.
- Color the printed rayon paper first with thinned acrylic paints to add more color.
