Project by Mary O'Neil.

Materials:

14" x 14" acetate/rayon velvet
13" x 13" contrasting fabric (backing)
Hot Potatoes curly leaf stamp #I393
12" x 12" cardboard
11-1/2" x 11-1/2" cardboard
5" x 5" clear acetate
1-1/2 yards decorative ribbon (5/8"-1" wide)
12" of beaded trim
fabric glue
Red Liner 1/4" wide double-stick tape
12" long wooden dowel
3/4 yard of ribbon or cord for hanger

Steps:

1. To emboss the velvet square: Lightly mist the wrong side of the fabric. Place the stamp (image side up) on the work surface or ironing board. Lay the fabric face down against the stamp image. Now firmly press the iron (set on high or cotton) to the fabric. Count to 20 and carefully lift up the iron (figure A). If there is any dampness left, press again, but never touch or move the fabric. Hold the iron over the entire stamp surface and avoid letting the steam holes touch the design areas. They will make an impression as well.

2. Apply fabric glue to the one entire side of the 12" x 12" square of cardboard . Place the embossed velvet face down on the work surface and center the cardboard, glue side down, onto the fabric and smooth.

3. Trim the four corners with diagonal cuts to within 1/2-inch of the corners of the cardboard. Fold the fabric neatly over to the backside and glue down with fabric glue (figure B).

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to make the backing of the frame, using the contrasting fabric and the other (smaller) cardboard square (figure C).

5. Cut two 14-inch pieces of decorative ribbon. Apply double-stick tape or fabric glue to the back of it and adhere the ribbon across the top and bottom of the velvet front of the frame, wrapping the edges around to the back of the cardboard (figure D).

6. Cut one 22-inch piece of decorative ribbon. Apply double-stick tape or fabric glue to the back of the ribbon and adhere it like a border around the four edges of the acetate (figure E).

7. Apply double-stick tape to three outside edges on the back of the acetate square. Center and attach the square to the front of the velvet, placing the side without tape at the top. This forms a "pocket" to slip the photo in.

8. Apply double-stick tape or fabric glue to the back of the beaded trim and attach it across the bottom back of the velvet piece so that only the beads are hanging down (figure F).

9. Cut two pieces of ribbon 4 inches long. Make a loop out of each of them and attach them with double-stick tape to the back top of velvet piece, in 2 inches from the outside edges (figure G). These will hold the dowel.

10. Apply glue or double-stick tape to the entire back of the fabric-covered backing piece and adhere it to the velvet piece (wrong sides together). The back is slightly smaller, so center it on the front piece.

11. Insert the dowel through the loops. Tie ribbon or cording to the ends of the dowel to form a hanger.
