permanent marker
translucent red, blue and yellow glass paints
small to medium paintbrush
felt feet

Figure A
Steps:

  1. Start with rounded glass tabletop. Position the tabletop on kraft paper (figure A) and trace the shape. Cut out the traced pattern.

Figure B
  • Fold the round cutout piece of kraft paper and divide into eighths like pie wedges (figure B). Crease paper heavily, and unfold.

    Figure C
  • Take a piece of heavy clear acetate at least as big as one of the wedges, and with permanent marker, trace the wedge shape onto the acetate (figure C).

    Figure D
  • Cut pieces of blue, red and yellow acetate into random geometric shapes (figure D).

    Figure E
  • Take clear acetate wedge and colored acetate shapes to color copy center and place the colored pieces on the clear acetate wedge in a pleasing pattern (figure E). Make eight copies onto copy-ready acetate (available from most copy centers) then cut away excess from acetate shapes.

  • Position the eight wedges of copied acetate on another piece of acetate that is slightly larger than the tabletop. Tape wedges in place to form a circle.

  • Place the glass tabletop on the large complete circular acetate pattern.

    Figure F
  • Use yellow, blue and red translucent glass paints to recreate the pattern, applying the yellow paint first and building on the design (figure F). Remove errant wet paint with a cotton swab, or with a razor blade after paint dries. If desired, overlap the primary colors to create secondary colors.

  • After letting the paint dry (approximately 1/2 hour), apply felt feet to protect the glass and place tabletop, paint and feet side down, on the table frame and enjoy.
