Make one-of-a-kind hand painted decorative clay tiles using oven-baked clay.

Materials:
white oven-baked clay
pasta maker or rolling pin
flat sturdy work surface covered with a piece of artists' canvas
tools: kitchen knife; cookie sheets; acrylic paints and various brushes
fine grain sandpaper
tile glue/grout mixture from hardware store
clear spray acrylic sealer

Steps:

  1. Knead and roll clay out into a slab about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick using a rolling pin or a pasta maker. Work on a canvas-covered surface. Work with a manageable amount of clay. Don't try to produce all of the tiles from one huge hunk of clay.

  2. Make a template for the tiles out of acetate.

Figure A
  • Use the template to cut the tile shapes out of the clay (figure A).

  • Follow directions on clay packaging to bake clay, or bake in a 350-degree oven for about 30 minutes or until clay is hard and dry. Let tiles cool in oven with door open and oven turned off.

  • When completely cooled, remove tiles from oven and place on flat work surface. Use a fine grain sandpaper to smooth the edges.

    Figure C
  • Paint a decorative design on tiles using paints and brushes (figure C). Either draw out a simple design or just start painting and see what happens. Metallic looks are very popular, and geometric shapes are the easiest. Let paint dry completely.

    Figure D
  • Glue the tiles to any desired surface with a combination tile glue and grout mixture following directions on grout packaging. Butt tiles up next to each other or leave a space and carefully grout between (figure D).

  • Finish with two to three coats of clear spray sealer.
