a length of 1" x 1" board
drill
wood screws
individual letter stencils
tape
acrylic paints

Steps:

  1. Find an old board. Rough pine works well. The featured frame used an old kitchen cabinet door.

  • Cut away a center portion of the board to accommodate a picture, marking out the area to be removed (figure A). Before cutting, brace the back of board using pieces of the 1" x 1" around the area to be removed (figure B), then cut out the rectangle by drilling fairly large holes in the corners, then connecting the dots using a saw.

  • If desired, give the board a rougher look by cutting edges in the board with the jigsaw.

    Figure C
  • Paint the board with a blend of gray and black acrylic paints to create a weathered look (figure C).

    Figure D
  • Create word stencils ("fish," "shrimp," "live bait") by taping individual letter stencils together (figure D). Paint the words on the board, letting them run off the edge if desired. A dry brush works best on this textured surface because if paint is applied too heavily, it can seep underneath the stencil.

  • Paint bright designs on wooden fish (figure E), then attach to the board using hot glue (figure F).

  • Use an awl to create a pilot hole for the very small cup hooks. Screw them into the bottom of the board and hang some fishing lures from them (figure G).

  • Mount your favorite fishing photo in the frame and hang.
