Make a wonderful table lamp base using real bamboo and coordinating decorative bamboo design shade.

Materials:
black, flat-sided lamp base - square or straight-sided round
lamp shade in appropriate size for lamp - square or round paper shade
lengths of small bamboo cut to same height as lamp base—enough to fit around and cover base from top to bottom
hot glue gun and glue sticks
scissors
spray glue
handmade paper to cover lampshade
Oriental design wood block stamp
metallic silver ink

If using a square shade then you can cut small diameter bamboo into lengths to fit around top edge and bottom edge of shade for a great look

Figure A
Steps:

  1. Hot glue pre-cut lengths of bamboo all around base of lamp. Run a bead of glue from top to bottom to hold securely. Butt the bamboo pieces up next to each other (figure A).

  2. To make the shade, select a nice handmade paper that coordinates with a stamped motif. Using a wood block stamp and metallic silver ink, stamp paper over an area large enough to cover all sides of the lampshade.

    Figure C
  • Use spray glue to attach decorative paper to shade (figure C). Before spraying the glue, put a piece of kraft paper down to protect work surfaces.

    Figure D
  • Hot glue small bamboo pieces around top and bottom edge of shade if using square shade (figure D). This will enhance the look and cover any space between the sheets of handmade paper.

  • Stain the bamboo with gel stains if you want a darker wood.
