Today's contribution to the Shoebox turned out to be indeed a surprise. It started with a lovely note from Jaine Wever of Woodland Hills, Calif., telling me how much she enjoyed the show and how impressed she was with the many talented folks who are out there. She also mentioned that she enjoyed making felt dolls and sent along some photographs. They were a varied group ranging from a fisherman to a young looking be-bopper to some ladies who looked dressed for tea. I was fascinated and called to inquire if we might borrow one or two to show on the air.
That's when the surprise came!
The dolls, it turned out, were not some little 12- to 18-inch dolls as I had visualized , but honest-to-goodness close to life-sized women! Well, almost, anyway. The two that visited us were probably 3 feet tall with hats that must have added another foot to their height! Totally decked out with pearls and rhinestones and every jewel they could manage to fit onto their outfits, they were quite a pair; and most amazing of all was the fact that they were made without a stitch of sewing! Everything was glued...the dolls themselves and everything they wore, including their shoes!
Jaine did not go into detail about how she accomplishes so much and does it so neatly, but she did say that she starts with two silhouettes, glues them together , and turns them right side out. How she manages to get them so beautifully and neatly stuffed I can't imagine, but she obviously takes time to get it right.
