Project designed by Michele Gerbrandt.
Materials:
pencil
metal ruler
small cross punch
cutting mat
8-1/2" x 11" rust-colored paper for matting photos
11" x 11" navy background paper
craft knife
Southwest border punch - discontinued, use any desired punch
mini-cross punch
12" x 12" piece of sandpaper or 12" x 12" piece of paper for mounting project
Mono Aqua photo-safe adhesive
Steps:
- With a pencil and ruler, mark 3/4" increments all the way down the length of the paper to visually show where to place each punch.
- Create the bottom border using the small cross punch to make one row of crosses into the strip of rust paper (figure A). Do the same on the opposite side of the paper, offsetting the marks just a bit so that the crosses do not line up exactly.
- Using a ruler and a craft knife, cut away the bottom portion from each row of crosses (figure B). Add negative pieces from the Southwest border as an embellishment, then glue on the page. Do the same technique with the navy paper, and glue it onto the bottom of the rust strip.
- To create the top border, use the small cross punch again. Punch out the navy paper in the same manner as in the bottom border, alternating the punched crosses. This time, however, the cross shapes should line up exactly.
- To create the mats for the lettering, use the mini cross punch to make the top portion of the cross at an angle across the top and bottom of the rectangular paper mat. It should look like half of an X.
- Use a 12" square of sandpaper or other colored paper as a mat to outline the photos.
Tips:
- Draw guidelines and dots on the back of the paper.
- Insert the paper into an upside-down punch to align.
- View the guides, and align them for accuracy. This should allow the crosses to be evenly spaced along the border.
- To create a 3-D look (figure C), layer two shades of paper--one slightly darker than the other.
