Tasteful Trunks

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-112 -- More Projects »
Based on a viewer idea, Carol decides to change an office supply store's plain cardboard storage boxes into distinctive fabric-covered boxes. Her admirable results are similar to designer box sets that often cost hundreds of dollars in retail stores. Carol even decorates some of the finished boxes with metal trunk parts to create a rich-looking effect.

Materials:

assorted cardboard boxes with removable lids dark or thick fabric that will cover up any lettering that may be on the boxes
iron-on fabric adhesive
iron
scissors
metal trunk embellishments such as corners, handles, locks, etc.
optional: batting

Steps:

Please note: Carol covers only the top of the box in her demonstration and explains that the process is identical to covering the bottom of the box.
  1. Put the top together as instructed on the packaging to see if there are any tabs that need to be trimmed off. Mark those areas.
  2. Unfold the lid, and trim off the places you marked in Step 2.
  3. Cut out a piece of fabric large enough to cover the unfolded lid.
  4. Use an iron-on bonding agent to place adhesive on the fabric.
  5. Attach the fabric to the box lid and iron out any wrinkles.
  6. Trim the fabric to fit the lid. Don't worry about rough edges that will be hidden once the lid is assembled.
  7. Assemble the lid.
  8. Use the same process to cover the remaining box with fabric.
Options:

Place a layer of batting on the box lid before applying fabric. Decorate your finished box with metal trunk parts.
