Materials:
assorted gourds
Wall Lenk 30-watt woodburning tool
Chartpak Splendid Blender
Chartpak Woodcrafters markers
gloves
pull saw or coping saw
cotton cloths
scraping tool (old spoon)
fish designs
dusk mask
transfer paper
safety glasses
satin or gloss acrylic varnish
pencil
foam brushes
180- or 220-grit sandpaper
Steps:
1. Gourds should be cut outside in a well-ventilated area. Wear a protective dust mask safety glasses and gloves. Mark a cutting line on the gourd with a pencil. Use a pull saw or jig saw to cut off the top (figure A).
2. Scrape out all the dried insides (membranes and seeds) and dispose of in a plastic bag.
3. Sand the edges of the gourd with sandpaper.
4. Draw or trace your design onto the gourd using transfer paper or a pencil (figure B). Tip: Place a towel in a bowl that is larger than the gourd Rest the gourd in the bowl to keep it from moving while transferring the drawing and wood burning (figure C).
5. Attach the dot-point tip to the wood burning tool. Plug in and allow to heat for 5 minutes. Trace around the designs with the dot-point tip (figure D).
6. Unplug the tool and let cool. Then remove the tip and attach a shading tip. Let the tool heat up again. Shade designs with the shading tip (figure E). Tip: Instead of unplugging and cooling tool before changing tips, use pliers to remove hot tips to an old ceramic tile and attach the next tip with pliers. Do not touch the hot surface of the tool.
7. "Paint" wood-burned designs on the gourds using the Chartpak woodcrafters markers (figure F). The chisel tip helps to paint small areas. Use the broad flat side of the pen to paint larger areas. Paint with two coordinating colors at the same time for a blended look, or apply one color, let dry, and apply accents of a different color over top. Tip: Two colors can be mixed together to create another color. On piece of plastic or mylar, scribble down a little of each color, and then use the Chartpak Splendid Blender to blend colors together and apply to the gourd's surface.
8. Let stain pens cure for 48 hours. Then apply a clear finish with a foam brush or spray with two or three coats of clear finish.
