Craft tabletop puzzles using simple wooden blocks, art posters and decoupage techniques.

Materials:

15 three-inch square wooden blocks
six pictures that will make a good 9" x 15" print
decoupage glue and brush
fine grain sandpaper
spray finish for wood

Steps:


  1. Cut 15 wooden squares out of 4" x 4" pieces of lumber. Cut these three inches square or to any desired size.

  • Build a wooden tray to accommodate the size and number of the blocks required for the chosen picture. The tray should hold the blocks snugly, but allow room to take the blocks in and out (figure A).

  • Choose a picture that will make a good puzzle and print it in a 9" x 15" size.

  • Divide the picture into a grid with squares the size of the blocks (figure B).

  • Cut the picture into squares according to gridlines (figure C).

  • Apply the cutouts to the wooden blocks with decoupage glue (figure D).

  • Sand the edges of your blocks smooth around the picture, pushing down away from the finished surface.

  • Apply a clear spray finish to protect the pictures and blocks.
