Create personalized and decorated "hands" and "hearts" from wooden cutouts.

Materials:
1/2-inch plywood
pencil
jigsaw
white paint or primer
scraps of pretty paper, with words, pictures, patterns, etc.
scissors
decoupage or white glue
paintbrush
drill and drill bit
piece of medium-gauge copper wire
lace
hot glue gun and glue sticks
charms
upholstery tacks
hammer

Steps:


  1. Use pencil to trace a hand onto a piece of 1/2-inch plywood.

  • Use a jigsaw to cut the tracing, and after sanding, paint the entire hand white with paint or primer (figure A).

  • Choose some pretty scraps of paper and tear or roughly cut the paper to the shapes of the hand. Tear some pieces for the fingers, etc.

  • Use decoupage or white glue to attach the pieces of paper to the hand, arranging them in an appealing manner. Let some of the background show between the pieces (figure B).

  • Wrap the excess edges around the sides, or let them dry then trim the edges.

  • Attach small decorative charms to the hand using raffia, twine, or ribbon (figure C).

  • Pre-drill a hole on either side of the hand. Attach a hanger to the holes using copper or similar wire (figure D).

    You can do the same kind of treatment on other wooden shapes like hearts.

    Try alternating paper with patterns such as stripes, dots, flowers, text, etc. Hot glue pretty lace between the paper types as a border between textures (figure E). Add a small photo with hot glue and hammer in upholstery tacks as an accent (figure F).
