Host Renai Ellison shows how to transfer a vintage portrait image onto a wooden plaque, using a colorful faux inlay technique (figure A).

Faux Inlay Wooden Portrait

Materials:

black and-white copy of a photograph
carbon paper
plywood, same size as picture
painters tape
sharp tool or pencil to trace photo
wood-burning tool
paintbrush
several colors of stain
shellac aerosol can

Steps:

  1. Place the photocopy and carbon paper over plywood.

  2. Secure carbon paper edges with painters tape.

  3. Use sharp tool or pencil to outline photograph (figure B).

  4. Remove carbon paper and photograph from plywood.

  5. Use the wood-burning tool to score the outline on the plywood (figure C).

  6. Add a little stain onto the plywood (figure D), then wipe off until the entire portrait has been painted.

  7. Spray shellac finish over the plywood and allow to dry.

* Note: Be sure to outline both the outside and inside lines on the lips, eyes and pupil.
