Priscilla Hauser, from Walnut Hollow, joined Carol to demonstrate one of her specialties: Russian floral painting. Traditionally, this art is created on metal trays using oil paints. Priscilla adapted the craft by using acrylic paints on wood.

Zhostovo Poppy Wastebasket

Materials:

unfinished wood wastebasket
Masterson Sta-Wet palette
Brush & Blend medium -- DecoArt Americana
sponge brush
straight blade palette knife
paper towels
chalk
fine grade sandpaper
water-base varnish
tracing paper
tack rag
Contact paper
plastic wrap
brushes:
Loew Cornell
- #1 liner
- #3 watercolor
- #14 filbert
paints:
Liquitex
- Burgundy
Folk Art
- Red Orange
DecoArt Americana
- Hauser Green Dark
- Hauser Green Medium
- Hauser Green Light
- Titanium White
- Cadmium Orange
- Black
- Glorious Gold

Preparation:
  1. Sand the wastebasket if needed. Wipe with a tack rag.
  2. Using a sponge brush, basecoat with black paint. Apply two coats, if needed, to cover. Let dry.
  3. Trace the oval design onto the paper backing of the Contact Paper. Cut out the oval.
  4. Apply the oval design to one side of the wastebasket. Press down firmly to securely seal the edges.
  5. Brush a thin layer of water onto the remaining areas.
  6. Apply a thin layer of Hauser Green Medium.
  7. Scrunch up a piece of plastic wrap. While the paint is still wet, press and lift the plastic wrap over the surface of the piece. This removes some of the green paint, letting the black basecoat show through. This creates a lovely faux finish. Let dry.
  8. Remove the oval of contact paper.
  9. Trim the upper edge of the wastebasket and the oval with Glorious Gold.
  10. Trace and transfer the poppy design onto the black oval.
Painting:

The Poppy
  1. Using your large filbert brush, basecoat the poppy and the leaves with brushstrokes of Titanium White. This basecoat is needed because of the black background.
  2. Repeat the basecoat on the poppy, using Red Orange. Be sure to cover all of the white. Let dry.
  3. Dip the large filbert brush in the Brush & Blend medium and then in the Burgundy. Apply a large shadow of Burgundy to the lower petals of the poppy.
  4. Overstroke with Red Orange, lifting into the shadow.
  5. Repeat this on the upper petals.
  6. Highlight all of the petals with strokes of Cadmium Orange. Study the strokes on the finished photo.
The Poppy Center
  1. Paint the center in Hauser Green Dark.
  2. Using the liner brush, paint tiny comma strokes of thin Hauser Green Light.
  3. Add dots of Cadmium Orange.
The Leaves
  1. Basecoat the leaves with brushstrokes of Hauser Green Medium, covering all of the white undercoat. Let dry.
  2. Apply Brush & Blend medium. Apply a mixture of Hauser Green Dark plus Burnt Umber to create the shadow at the base of the leaf.
  3. Overstroke the leaf with Hauser Green Light, lifting into the shadow.
  4. Quickly overstroke this with white, lifting into the shadow.
The Stem
  1. Basecoat the stem in Hauser Green Medium.
  2. Shade with Burnt Umber.
  3. Highlight with white.
  4. When dry, apply the water-based varnish of your choice.
