Carol employs 1990s materials to achieve the seamless, completely smooth look of the decoupage of the '60s and earlier.

Steps:
  1. Select wood and picture.
  2. Paint wood with acrylic paint. Let dry and sand.
  3. Use cuticle scissors (Carol recommends Revlon) to cut out picture, leaving a small border (figure A).
  4. Coat the picture with an acrylic sealer (figure B).
  5. With the curve of the scissors facing away from the picture, cut off the border.
  6. Apply acrylic sealers or white glue mixed with water to the back of the picture to adhere the picture to the wood.
  7. Place a damp cloth over the picture and use a brayer roller to smooth it down (figure C).
  8. Wipe away the excess glue.
  9. Let dry overnight.
  10. Use a clean, soft brush (or a sponge brush) to coat the piece with decoupage finish.
  11. Wait 3 hours and then coat again. Do the same after another 3 hours.
  12. When you can no longer feel the surface of the picture, use #400 wet/dry sandpaper to sand away any bubbles/imperfections.
  13. Wipe off milky residue.
  14. Add additional coats of sealer, sand and repeat.
  15. Use extra fine steel wool to sand.
  16. Wax with a fine-grade furniture polish.
