Carol employs 1990s materials to achieve the seamless, completely smooth look of the decoupage of the '60s and earlier.
Steps:
- Select wood and picture.
- Paint wood with acrylic paint. Let dry and sand.
- Use cuticle scissors (Carol recommends Revlon) to cut out picture, leaving a small border (figure A).
- Coat the picture with an acrylic sealer (figure B).
- With the curve of the scissors facing away from the picture, cut off the border.
- Apply acrylic sealers or white glue mixed with water to the back of the picture to adhere the picture to the wood.
- Place a damp cloth over the picture and use a brayer roller to smooth it down (figure C).
- Wipe away the excess glue.
- Let dry overnight.
- Use a clean, soft brush (or a sponge brush) to coat the piece with decoupage finish.
- Wait 3 hours and then coat again. Do the same after another 3 hours.
- When you can no longer feel the surface of the picture, use #400 wet/dry sandpaper to sand away any bubbles/imperfections.
- Wipe off milky residue.
- Add additional coats of sealer, sand and repeat.
- Use extra fine steel wool to sand.
- Wax with a fine-grade furniture polish.
