Figure E
Project designed by Bunny DeLorie.

Materials:

Walnut Hollow cornice box - #3213
Bunny Burner transfer tool
branding kit with wood burning tool and tips
photocopies of butterfly designs
watercolor pencils
small container of water
round artist brush
200-grit sandpaper
clear acrylic sealer
transfer paper and pencil - optional

Steps:

1. Lightly sand the box and remove the dust with a soft cloth.

2. Enlarge or reduce the butterflies to fit the size of the box. Color the large butterfly first with colored pencils, then make a color copy to transfer for a more nostalgic look (figure A).

3. Place the large butterfly face down on the center of the box. Slowly rub the transfer tool across the back of the copy and lift the paper as you heat transfer the design (figure B).

4. Transfer the black and white butterfly designs on the sides of the box as in step 3. As an optional method, use transfer paper and a pencil to trace the butterflies onto the box.

5. Attach the dot point tip to the wood burning tool and heat for about five minutes. Use this tip to wood burn all the lines on the butterflies (figure C).

6. Attach a shading tip to the wood burning tool. Use this tip to shade parts of the butterflies' bodies and wings.

7. Attach the corner leaf-branding stamp to the wood burning tool and brand the four corners of the lid of the box. Stamp a leaf stamp between the corner stamps . Stamp various insect stamps onto all sides and top of box (figure D).

8. Color the butterflies with colored pencils. Use a damp artist's brush to blend the colors (figure E).

9. Clear coat the butterflies with one or two coats of a spray or liquid acrylic finish.

Tips:

  • Do not touch the hot surface of the tool!
  • No need to unplug the wood burner when changing tips. Use pliers to remove hot tips from the wood burning tool.
  • Place hot tips onto a ceramic tile. Attach next tip with pliers.
