Barry Freestone designed and demonstrated this project.

Materials:

4 sheets extra-thick film
balloon designs
water-based glass paints, diluted
black outliner
piping bag made from parchment paper
silicone glue
No . 2 paint brush

Steps:

1. Remove protective sheet from extra thick film about 30 minutes before you want to outline on it to give the static electricity time to disperse. If you don't do this, your outliner may do a line dance.

2. Make an outlining bag with a triangle of parchment paper and fill halfway with outliner (figure A).

3. Fold flaps over to center and roll up (figure B). Snip the end of the point of piping bag and test outliner on a piece of tissue paper.

4. Place your design underneath the film and outline it (figure C). Repeat this process for the other three panels and let dry.

5. Paint balloons in desired colors. Do not paint adjacent areas at the same time (figure D). Allow one section to dry before painting the one next to it.

6. To form a 3-D picture, the balloons need to be separated with silicone glue . Place about a 1/2-inch blob of silicone on each corner of each painted side. Do this in stages if necessary. When desired distance is achieved, leave the silicone to dry fully.

7. Using a box frame the same size as the panels, place the panel with the least detail in the box frame first, and then the next most detailed, and so on. The most detailed design should be at the back (figure E).

8. Place backing board on the frame and seal with masking tape or framing tape .
