Figure C
Glass painter Alan Gear shows how to make modern mirror and glass tiles that can be used for walls (figure A), tabletops and other projects.

Materials:

pieces of glass, cut to desired shape and size
outlining tubes (paint tubes with small nozzles)
parchment paper
water-based glass paint in colors of choice
small containers or jars with lids to mix paint
variety of paintbrushes
pieces of mirror, cut to desired shape and size
clear silicone glue

Steps:

  1. Place the first piece of glass over the design.

  2. Outline the glass piece with the paint tube by touching the tip of the tube to the glass and squeezing a continuous line of paint (figure B).

  3. Lift the outliner following the design and bring it down to an end point. Lift the outliner off the glass. Repeat until the entire design has been outlined.

  4. Place a bead of outlining paint along the edge of the glass to create a reservoir that will hold the paint on the glass. Allow to dry.

  5. Mix water with the glass paint to the desired consistency. It should be a very fine mixture. Use small jars with lids to allow for easy storage.

  6. Paint one color at a time (figure C) to allow even drying, or the various colors will mix.

  7. Allow entire design to dry for at least 24 hours before assembling mirror.

  8. To attach mirror, flip the glass design over and place it on top of the mirror. Be sure the mirror is clean.

  9. Firmly press the glass and mirror together, then seal around the outer edges with clear silicone glue. Allow to dry.

Tip

Make a larger outlining bottle by wrapping a piece of parchment paper into a triangle. Pull the right corner to center corner and wrap the left corner around. This makes a tight tube. Fold the top corners down to secure cone. Fill the parchment tube half full with the outlining paint. Roll the top down to seal the tube and create a full cone. Cut a small tip off the parchment paper to allow paint to squeeze through.
