Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to use scrap wood to create a shrine display case that's perfect for showing off collections made of natural materials.
Materials:
scrap wood and plywood
drill
wood screws
metal-mending plates
hammer
nails
screws
glue gun
twigs
paint
removable adhesive
shells, postcards, decorative items
Steps:
- Cut scrap wood to make a shoebox-sized rectangle. Cut enough for two more rectangles (They don't have to be the same size. You might want to make the middle one wider). Put the boxes together with wood screws (figure A).
- Attach the three "boxes" together with metal-mending plates on the back (figure B).
- Cut out small triangles of wood and attach them to the top front of the boxes using nails or screws (figure C). These make a decorative "crown" for the display case. Attach a piece of plywood to the back of the three boxes with screws. This becomes the back of the display case.
- Use a glue gun to attach twigs around the front of the boxes (figure D).
- Make a wash by watering down paint, then whitewash the entire case, including the twigs. Let dry.
- Place postcards, shells, bird's nests or other items inside the case for display, using removable adhesive.
