Host Renai Ellison welcomes Katheryn Bieber of E-Z Craft, who gives a demonstration of how to add a touch of elegance to decor with homemade mosaic-glass accessories.
Tools such as glass cutters and running pliers are designed to fit the hand and are easy to use. A specialized cutting board, which is available at most craft shops, will catch and hold tiny particles of glass (figure A).
Materials:
tile nippers, running pliers
straight edge
stained glass cutting board from craft shops or newspapers as a work surface for cutting glass
mosaic glass
safety glasses
glass cutter
Plexiglas as a base for the project
clear silicone
white grout
Steps:
- To cut, score glass, beginning just beyond the edge. Use running pliers to break the straight line.
- Get precut flower pieces to avoid cutting yourself.
- Put silicone on the back of the pieces as the Plexiglas is being assembled (figure B).
- Use tile nippers to cut random pieces or trim edges. Be as random as you'd like and enjoy the variety of pieces.
- Use white grout (from craft stores) and apply with a plastic spatula after the glass pieces have dried. Wipe the excess grout off with a moist sponge (figure C) after letting the grout set for about 15 minutes.
