Project designed by Mimi Huszer Fagnant.

Light up a lamp with mosaics.

Take one look at these colorful, detailed lamps and you might think they're too difficult to make. Wrong. They're easy, fun and make a huge statement when placed over a candle or bulb. You'll need several supplies that might not be handy around the house, but once you've acquired them, making the lamp is easy.

Materials:

Clearly Mosaics marbleized pieces from The Beadery Craft Products
one package powdered ivory grout
clear silicone sealer
glass hurricane lamp, 8-1/2-inch tall
china marker or Stabilo pencil
toothpicks
wire cutters - optional
safety glasses if using wire cutters
glass cleaner
paper towels
small stick for stirring
small disposable bowl
rubber gloves
sponge or pre-moistened baby wipes

Steps:

  1. Clean hurricane lampshade with glass cleaner and paper towels.

  2. Tape desired pattern to the inside of the lampshade. See figures A, B and C for featured design.

  3. Apply silicone to the glass surface over the pattern (figure D). Using a pencil eraser for small tiles, press appropriate mosaic pieces in place, allowing some silicone to seep out around all edges (figure E). You have a few minutes to adjust pieces before silicone sets up. While silicone is pliable, use a toothpick to clean up excess from around pieces, thus allowing room for the grout.

  4. Continue moving the pattern over to the next spot and repeat step 3. Continue until designs are completed.

  5. Grouting: Add water sparingly to a portion of powdered grout and mix. Add more grout or water as necessary until the consistency of pie dough or putty is reached. Apply grout by pressing and spreading it between mosaic pieces (figure F). Remove excess by wiping gently in, circular motion with a damp sponge or baby wipes. Wipe off haze when dry (after 24 hours) using glass cleaner and a paper towel.
Tip: Mosaic pieces may be easily reshaped or trimmed with wire cutters as desired.
