Figure F
Artist Chris Wallace, from Duncan Enterprises, shows how to use three-dimensional templates, paste, and paints to create exquisite trunks and boxes. She also demonstrates how to use the technique of verdigris, which gives an antique touch to the boxes and adds a unique look.

Editor's note: Though several of the products used for this project are no longer made by the manufacturer, similar results can be accomplished using dry wall compound as a substitute for dimensional paste. To design your own paste templates, draw a chunky design on a foam sheet then cut it out, creating a stencil-type template.

3-D Accents Border

Materials:

Aleene's Enhancers
  -EN 104 All-Purpose Primer
  -EN 107 Matte Varnish
3D Design paste - discontinued
3D Design foam template - discontinued
Tools:
  - 2" trowel
  - 4" trowel
  - Cleaning & Design Tool - discontinued
Aleene's Premium-Coat acrylic paints
Aleene's Instant Decoupage, Matte Finish brushes and tools:
  - 3/4-inch flat brush
  - 1/4-inch flat brush
  - bristle brush
decorative paper
low-tack spray adhesive or masking tape
pencil
wooden box from Walnut Hollow
ruler
sandpaper
scissors
screwdriver
tassel

Steps:

  1. Use screwdriver to remove the knob from the box.
  2. Using the 3/4-inch flat brush, apply one coat of primer to box and knob. Let dry and sand lightly.
  3. Apply one coat of low-tack spray adhesive to the back of the foam design template. Let dry.
  4. Place the template near the top of the box as a border, press to secure, and apply Design paste to it (figure A). Let paste set up then remove template. Clean template after each use. Let design dry (figure B) completely. Lightly sand.
  5. Using the 3/4-inch flat brush, base-coat entire box with paint, including the sides of the 3-D design, with two coats of maroon colored paint (figure C). Let dry.
  6. Measure the top of the lid. Cut out a piece of decorative paper slightly smaller than the lid. Note: Paper may expand when wet. Apply decoupage according to directions on the label. When paper is dry, use the tip of the screw to press through the hole on the top of the lid. Do not tear the paper.
  7. Using the 1/4-inch flat brush, paint knob and the 3D design (figure D), including the sides, with two coats of maroon colored paint. Let dry.
  8. Dip the tip of the bristle brush into gold-colored paint. Wipe off almost all of the paint onto a paper towel. Brush over the surface of the design border with little or no pressure. This technique creates a soft layering of paint rather than a thick coat. Use this dry-brushing technique to apply gold to the sides of the lid. Let dry.
  9. Lightly sand the edges of the box to reveal a hint of the bare wood.
  10. For a protective finish, apply one coat of varnish to box and knob, using the 3/4-inch shader brush. Let dry.
  11. Re-attach the knob to the box and attach the tassel to the top of the box.
Verdigris Method

Materials:

Aleene's Premium-Coat acrylics - sage, white
Aleene's Essentials
  - OC 302 Antique Gold
  - OC 304 Copper
Aleene's Enhancers
  - EN 104 All-Purpose Primer
  - EN 107 Matte Varnish
3D Design Paste: - discontinued
3D Design Templates: Grape - discontinued
Tools: 2" Trowel, 4" Trowel
variety of brushes
low-tack spray adhesive or masking tape
sandpaper
paper towels
two sea sponges
wooden or paper mache box

Steps:
  1. Apply one coat of primer to the box. Let dry. Sand lightly.
  2. Apply a low-tack spray adhesive to the back of the design template. Position on the box as desired then let dry.
  3. With the two-inch trowel, apply Design paste to template. Remove any excess with the four-inch trowel. Let dry completely. Use sandpaper to remove any rough edges on the design.
  4. Paint design with sage-colored paint (figure E). Let dry.
  5. Thin white paint with water until it has a light-cream consistency. Use one sponge to sparingly apply the mixture in a random pattern to the verdigris area. Slightly dampen the second sponge and use it to remove any undesirable white areas (figure F). The white surface should appear very sheer. Let dry.
  6. Using the stiff bristle brush, dry-brush with antique gold-colored paint, and then copper-colored paint, as follows: Dip the bristles into color, then wipe off almost all the paint onto a paper towel. Brush lightly over the box.
  7. For a protective finish, apply one coat of varnish to the box.
