Host Kathi Cardinalli shows how to turn a plain, unfinished wooden box into an elegant decorative piece that combines Italian and Asian styles. Materials:
unfinished wooden box
wet/dry sandpaper, medium, fine and extra-fine grit
tack cloth
flat black matte paint
high-gloss black lacquer spray paint
paintbrushes in a variety of sizes
clear embossing ink
Asian rubber stamp
embossing powder
embossing tool
paint pen
decoupage paper
pieces of Italian script paper
repositionable adhesive
Steps:
- If necessary, lightly sand an unfinished wooden box with medium-grit paper (figure A), and remove the sanding dust with a tack cloth.
- Paint with flat black matte paint, lightly sand, then paint with a light coat of high-gloss black paint. Lightly sand again with wet sandpaper. Add another coat of high-gloss paint after the surface is dry.
- Repeat the wet sanding process with a lighter-grit sandpaper, and add a final coat of high-gloss paint. Continue this process with progressively lighter grit paper until the final coat of paint is truly glossy. Let each coat dry along the way.
- Put clear embossing ink on the Asian rubber stamp and stamp on the box top. Sprinkle on embossing powder and brush away the excess (figure B). Use embossing tool to heat the top and finalize the embossing process.
- Use a paint pen to add an ornate gold trim to the edges.
- Get pieces of Italian script paper, trimmed to fit the inside of the box (top, bottom and sides).
- Spray repositionable adhesive to the back of the paper and adhere to the box (figure C).
Tip
Don't leave the embossing tool pointed at the embossing any longer than is necessary, or you will damage the glossy paint of the top.
