Guest Jennifer Ferguson from The Stencilled Garden demonstrates how to make decorative accessories out of simple glass bottles.
Materials:
Etch-All etching dip
empty two-liter container
glass bottle
permanent black marker
wire
wire cutters
painter's tape
stencil brushes
embossing tool
AquaGard matte-finish varnish
Americana Acrylic Paints: black #DA67, moon yellow #DA07,evergreen #DA82, violet haze #DA197
wild posies stencil #TSG190
Steps:
1. Cut off the top of a two-liter bottle and clean it well. Keep the top to use as a funnel.
2. Place the glass bottle to be etched inside the two-liter container (figure A). Fill it with water up to the level of your desired etching line (figure B).
3. Remove the bottle and mark the level of the water on the outside of the plastic container. Then empty the water and refill the plastic container to this mark with Etch-All. Etch the glass bottles, following package instructions (figure C).
4. When the bottles are done, stencil flowers with violet haze. Allow to dry and apply another layer of color (figure D).
5. Stencil the second overlay. Stencil leaves with evergreen and remember to allow color to dry before applying another layer of color (figure E).
6. Using an embossing tool, add centers to the flowers with moon yellow. Remember to reload the tip for every center dot you make.
7. Using the embossing tool again, apply dots around the flowers with black, reloading for each dot so that the dots are raised (figure F).
8. Allow all paint to dry for 24 to 48 hours. Then apply a matte-finish varnish over all the etched areas.
9. Wind wire around the neck of the bottle and add beads if desired (figure G).
10. If you like, use a metallic pen to add words or designs in the etched areas (figure H).
