Figure E
Inspired by Hans Frabel's glass lizards (figure A), host Renai Ellison shows how to use a simple glass-etching treatment to create exciting and decorative designs on home furnishings.

Materials:

glass vase
clip-art book
adhesive paper
scissors or craft knife
rubber gloves
safety glasses
etching cream
paintbrush
sponge
tap water

Steps:

  1. Select a design that you want featured on the vase from a clip-art book (or any other source of choice). The design can be enlarged, reduced or simplified as necessary (figure B).

  2. Copy and cut out the shape.

  3. Trace the shape over adhesive paper (figure C).

  4. Cut out the adhesive shape and stick it to the glass.

  5. Use as many other designs and shapes as you wish.

  6. After putting on gloves and glasses, use a paintbrush to cover the entire glass area liberally with etching cream (figure D). Let dry.

  7. Rinse off the etching cream.

  8. Peel away the adhesive paper to reveal the image that has been burnished onto the glass (figure E).
