Guest Carol Sterbenz uses etching cream to create trendy, frosted glassware. She demonstrates the process, from start to finish, and explains how this idea can be utilized to produce charming wedding and shower gifts.
Materials:
assorted colored glassware (e.g. bowls, plates, glasses, etc.)
Armour Etch cream
rubber cement or masking tape
goggles
rubber gloves
Steps:
All shapes and styles of glassware are appropriate for this project, and you need not be limited to the stripe and polka dot patterns suggested here. Use your imagination to create personalized designs, but be sure to practice on an old piece of glass or on paper before applying the etching cream to a favorite glass or plate. Once the design is etched, it is permanent.
- Clean glass well before applying the etching cream (figure A).
- For stripes, polka dots, or other images, place masking tape or use a brush to apply rubber cement to the areas that will NOT be frosted (figure B).
- Place approximately 1/4 inch of Armour Etch cream on the glass. Let the cream set for two to three minutes (figure C).
- Plunge the glass into a sink filled with water, and scrub the cream off. An old toothbrush works well (figure D).
- After all cream is removed, peel off the masking tape or rubber cement. Wash the glass in soapy water and let dry.
- Repeat with other pieces.
