"Kendra" A Stained Glass Metal Sculpture

Victoria Hart has been drawing, painting and sculpting since her childhood. In high school, her teachers suggested she focus her talents on art above academics. She studied fine art in her hometown of Seattle, living the life of a starving artist until she became pregnant. Realizing she would have to settle down, she got her degree in graphic design and continued with her art on the side. For the past 11 years she has been living in Las Vegas creating unique stained-glass sculptures like the one featured today!

Materials:

designed pattern
stained glass
glasscutter
glass grinder
copper foil
flux
paintbrush
50/50 solder
soldering iron
glass cleaner
paper towels
patina
metal base
wire
assorted beads

1. Draw out the design and use as a pattern (figure A)

2. Select glass colors.

3. Using the pattern as a guide, cut out glass pieces carefully with a glasscutter (figure B).

4. Grind glass using a grinder to smooth the edges of the glass (figure C).

5. Wrap all of the glass edges with copper foil to prepare for soldering (figure D).

6. Paint flux onto the foil edges, covering all foil completely, to prepare for soldering.

7. Solder pieces together on both sides using a soldering iron (figure E).

8. Clean glass with glass cleaner.

9. Using different lengths of wire, add beads to the ends and close off (figure F), then solder to the head to make crazy hair (figure G).

10. Wipe patina onto the solder if desired. Attach to a metal base.
