Figure B
Host Renai Ellison demonstrates how easy it is to make decorative glass platters and plates (see photo at right).

Materials:

removable adhesive or tacky wax (available at craft stores)
natural items such as twigs, leaves and flowers
clear plate or platter
spray paint (Krylon stained glass color, frosted glass spray and American Accents paint were used on the show, but any paint that will adhere to glass will do fine.)
clear acrylic sealer (Crystal Clear from Krylon was used, but any clear paint will work; spray being easier; it doesn't matter if it is gloss or matte finish)

Steps:

  1. Use removable adhesive to stick leaves or other items in the desired pattern on the back of the plate (figure A).

  2. Spray the first color over the back of the plate, heavily coating the plate and leaves (figure B). Let dry.

  3. Remove leaves. Spray the second color on the plate, making sure to cover the clear spaces. Let dry.

  4. If desired, spray edges with a third color. Let dry.

  5. Spray with one coat of acrylic sealer.

* Note: This paint treatment needs to be done on the BACK of the clear glass plate, not on the side that food will be on (these are really better for "display" plates). Plates and platters decorated in this fashion must be washed by hand. It is not a "permanent" finish (like the bake-on paints), although it will hold up pretty well. The "stained-glass" paints are nice for this, as are the "mirror" paints.
