Maintaining Your Tools

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-238 -- More Projects »
Off-beat-ideas guru Joey Green shares simple tips for keeping workshop tools clean and working properly.
  • Use a large garbage bag as an apron.

  • Place a nail or screw through a piece of tape to provide an easy hold.

  • Rub soap on nails and screws makes them go in easier.

  • If you have greasy hands, rub them with vegetable shortening or sugar to get rid of the slick surface.

  • To remove rust, soak tools overnight in a vinegar bath.

  • In a pinch, use spearmint gum as a caulk--works on windowpanes and hoses.

  • Use toothpaste to fill a small picture hole in a wall.

  • If a door hinge is squeaking, lubricate it with hair conditioning from a tube, shaving cream or furniture polish.

  • Cut the fingers off rubber gloves and put on the tips of pliers to avoid leaving a mark with them.

  • Lubricate a saw with soap for easier cutting. Then, when finished cutting, use a drier sheet to clean up saw dust.
