Smart Ways to Iron

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-326 -- More Projects »
Author Janet Sobesky demonstrates how easy ironing really is, once you know the proper techniques.

Iron Temperatures

  • Heat the iron to correct temperature before using. There should be instructions on the dial for which settings work best with certain fabrics.

  • Iron fabrics that take cooler temperatures first, then increase the heat.

  • High-temperature fabrics include cotton and linen, while low-temperature fabrics include anything synthetic or silk.

  • Iron clothes when damp and spray the starch on the back of fabric instead of the front.

Ironing a Shirt

The collar should be done first, ironing from the outside edge to middle from each side. Next comes the cuffs, then shoulders, body and finally around the buttons.

Ironing Pants

Start with the inside waist, then move to the outside. Next are the legs. Match the seams and iron one side at a time.
