Guest Lynell Harlow demonstrated this unique project.

Materials:

block stamp
brass stencil (background stencils work well)
a variety of light and dark pigment inks
scrap paper for blotter
smooth card stock

Steps:

1. Heavily load the block stamp with pigment ink. Place a stencil onto the blotter paper and press the inked stamp onto the stencil (figures A and B).

2. Without re-inking, stamp the image onto a contrasting color of card stock. The resulting image will have the stencil design imprinted into the stamped design (figure C).

3. Crop the image and layer with contrasting colored card stock for a finished card to send to a friend.

Tips:

- Heavily ink the stencil with a darker color pigment ink than the stamp (figure D).

- Move to a clean area on the blotter paper to keep the stamp clean when impressing the stamp on the stencil, because it will have a lighter shade of ink on it.

- Shift or slightly shove the stamp on the stencil and blotter paper for a shaded look. This will give you the same feel of dimension that decorative paste papers does.

- When you apply the stamp to the stencil, press a bit harder so that it will press into the paper and a bit of ink will be removed from the stamp for an additional shaded look (figure E).

- Try inking with silver or light-colored ink on dark-colored card stock (figure F).

- Clean and dry the stamp and stencil with a soft T-shirt fabric to avoid fuzz from paper towels.
