Fan
Materials:

Museum of Modern Rubber stamps:
  - lace fan - #L-879
  - leaf fan - #J-880
  - medium heart doily - #H-236
  - lily fan - #H-882
  - butterfly fan - # F-881
  - Thing of Beauty - #D-886
three coordinating colors of card stock
heavy vellum
pigment ink stamp pads
clear and gold embossing powder
small piece of chipboard - about the size of a bookmark
magic markers, colored pencils or watercolors
small piece of white shrink plastic
Fabrico or Color Box Crafters stamping ink
paper craft glue or double-sided tape
beaded tassel
tassel-making tool and kit - On the Surface
hobby knife
scissors
1/8-inch diameter hole punch
heat tool

Steps:

1. Stamp the lace fan stamp seven times onto vellum. To achieve the look of lace, use white ink on colored vellum, or a very pale color on white vellum. Sprinkle clear embossing powder over all the stamped images. Tap off the excess and heat until melted. Cut out all seven pieces around the outer edge.

2. Stamp two of the lace fan stamps onto card stock. Emboss in gold and cut out.

3. Stamp the leaf fan stamp six times onto card stock. Emboss in gold. Cut out around the outer edges.

4. Stamp the lily fan stamp four times. Emboss in gold and cut out. Stamp a few extra images of the top portion of the fan and emboss. Cut out the fan pieces as well as a few extra single flowers from the right side of the fan.

5. Stamp two of the medium heart doily stamps onto card stock and emboss in gold. Cut out around the outer edges.

6. Stamp the top of the butterfly fan stamp three times and emboss in gold. Cut out the large butterfly from the top of the fan.

7. To assemble the fan, start by gluing the back together, then layer all the other pieces on top of it. Each of the layers will be slightly offset from the previous layer.

8. Glue on of the lace fan pieces over one of the medium heart doily pieces so that about 1/2 inch of the doily shows at the top (figure A). This will be the back side of the fan handle.

9. Trim the chip board so that it is slightly narrower than the lace fan piece. Glue in place to the back side of the lace fan. Position the chip board so that it does not cover the lower 1/2 inch of the card stock. Glue the second doily to this side, lining up the doily with the one underneath (figure B). All the fan blade sections will glue to this side.

10. Glue the vellum lace fan pieces to the fan handle. Position the pieces so that the bottom edge is about 1/2 inch up from the lower point of the doily (figure C). Overlap the fan blades so they form a half circle shape.

11. Glue the leaf fan pieces over the lace pieces. The bottom edges of the leaf fan pieces will be slightly lower than the lace fan pieces.

12. Glue the lily fan pieces in place (figure D). The bottoms of these pieces will be slightly lower than the leaf fan pieces.

13. For added dimension, place a few of the extra flower cutouts on top of the lily fans using foam mounting tape.

14. Glue the remaining card stock lace fan in place over the top of the fan handle. Punch out the hole at the bottom of the handle.

15. Curve the butterfly wings slightly. Position the butterflies onto the fan. Attach with small pieces of foam mounting tape.

16. To make the sentiment at the center of the fan handle, smudge a very small amount of plastic compatible ink onto a small piece of white shrink plastic. Make sure this color is much lighter than the desired shade.

17. Stamp the saying "A Thing of Beauty" onto the shrink plastic. Cut out an oval shape around the words. Following the manufacturers directions, heat until the plastic shrinks and lays flat. Glue in place to the fan.

Tassel
Materials:

On The Surface mini Tattool
On The Surface beaded tassel kit
tassel consists of: 100 6/0 beads, 25 yards metallic thread

Steps:

1. Thread 20 yards of thread onto a beading needle. Double the thread so the needle is at the center. Wind excess thread onto a small piece of cardboard. Leave about one yard of thread free, then thread on 100 beads.

2. Position the tatool to slightly larger than the smallest setting.

3. Tape a scrap of cording across the top end of the tool. This is a temporary cord (figure E).

4. Tape the needle to the lower edge of the tool, then begin to wind around the tool, leaving two beads behind on each turn. Wind until all beads are used. Tape the remaining thread end to the lower edge of the tool to hold it in place (figure F).

5. Adjust the tool slightly so that the thread is just barely slack. Push all threads into the center.

6. Cut 30 inches of thread and double it. Wrap around the neck of the tassel with this doubled thread, leaving a small loop toward the bottom. Wrap around the tassel 10 to 12 times. Thread the cord through the loop and pull the upper thread until this loop disappears under the wound threads. Trim off excess thread.

7. To make a cord to attach the tassel to the fan, double approximately one yard of thread and twist with a twisting tool or by hand about 40 times until the thread is firm. Loosen one end of the temporary cording at the top of the tool and tie to one end of the cording. Pull the cording through the top of the tassel (figure G).

8. Loosen the tool enough so you can slide the bottom of the tassel off the frame. Unscrew the adjusters so that the frame separates, and remove the top of the tassel from the frame.

9. Tie the ends of the cording into a secure knot, forming a loop approximately two inches or longer. Pull the cord until the knot is hidden inside the top of the tassel.

10. Attach the tassel to the fan.
