Figure B
Project designed by Carolyn Dahl.

Materials:

small foam brayer
fabric paint
rubber fish replica, rubber fish from toy or bait store, or rubber stamps with fish printed on it
white or light-colored fabric, any content, smooth weave, washed and ironed, or paper
foam meat tray or paper plate
work surface covered with scrap paper or newspapers

Steps:

  1. Wet foam brayer and squeeze out excess moisture.
  2. Coat tray with fabric paint, and roll the brayer back and forth in the tray to distribute the paint evenly.
  3. Place scrap paper or newspaper around the edges of the fish replica. Roll an even coat of paint over the fish, and gently pull the paper scraps out from under the fish (figure A).
  4. Carefully lay the fabric over the replica. With one hand, gently hold the replica in place. With the other, press or rub over the surface of the fish replica, including fins and the tail (figure B). Try not to press on the same area twice, or it may smudge the print.
  5. Peel off the fabric from one end of the fish to the other. Allow to dry while repainting the fish replica and making another print.
  6. When dry, heat set the paint according to manufacturer instructions.
  7. To clean the rubber fish replica, wash gently in warm, soapy water and pat dry with a paper towel.
