The Carol Duvall Show camera crew travels to northern Michigan to visit Rogene Fischer, who specializes in unique stenciling, to show how she uses stencils to decorate old tabletops.
Fischer started stenciling about 20 years ago to decorate her home. Since then, her hobby has turned into a business. She has a studio that doubles as a furniture store in a old building, and she uses the walls as canvases for her stencil art.
One of Fischer's most unique ideas is a stenciled quilt table. Originally intending to stencil a quilt design on the wall in her living room, she decided to try the design on a plain-looking table that wouldn't sell in her shop.
Fischer begins her creation by centering the pattern on an unfinished tabletop. She tapes on the first of four overlays and uses fast-drying acrylic paint to apply color to the tabletop. Next, she places on a second onto the tabletop and Fischer adds more color. After all four overlays have been used and no more than six to eight colors have been added, Fischer adds embellishments around the edges of the table.
Fischer says that stenciling doesn't require a lot of art skills. In fact, she discusses her own art abilities as an example. "I always laugh because I never thought of myself as an artist," Fischer says. "I never took art in high school. The teacher wouldn't have even let me in the door. I just never felt I had any artistic ability." But Fischer's lack of artistic ability doesn't affect her stenciling. "It's just paint," she says. "If it doesn't work out, you can always paint over it."
