Project designed by Jan Dressler.
Materials:
two pairs pre-finished bi-fold closet doors hinged together
acrylic paints
sealant
paint conditioner
small sponge rollers
Dressler miniature house components stencils (#233)
stencil brushes
tape measure
carpenter square
masking tape
paper towels
paper plate
Steps:
1. The pairs of doors may already be hinged at the centers, but you will need to hinge the two pairs together so that they fold out like an accordion.
2. Using a sponge roller, apply a primer to the doors.
3. When dry, use a clean roller to paint each door a different color. Use acrylic paint blended with a paint conditioner for easy of application, or use leftover latex paint.
4. Determine the layout for each row house, making each one different from its neighbor.
5. Using the carpenter square, establish level guidelines for the windows, doors and front steps. Use masking tape to mask out areas of various colors such as foundations.
6. To stencil, squeeze out a puddle of paint the size of a 50-cent piece onto a paper plate. You will need a clean dry stencil brush for each color of paint.
7. Dip a brush in the paint and wipe most of it off on a folded paper towel, working the paint into the bristles of the brush.
8. Stipple or pounce the paint through the stencil, transferring the image onto the surface of the door (figure A). Follow the instructions within the stencil package for each individual object.
9. When you are done, apply a spray sealer to the piece.
