Stencil artist Jan Dressler demonstrates how to stencil and paint a vine and flowers image on a window shade. She recommends that the stencil be practiced first on paper, and that it is best to use one stencil brush per color.
She first pounces yellow, then green, then the flower colors of blue and pink. She adds purple around the edges of the flowers, removes the stencil and outlines the design with Payne's Gray, Liberty Blue or another dark color to provide dimension.
Next, Jan teaches us how to stencil on ceramics, specifically kitchen tile. She recommends using a bake-able acrylic enamel stippled onto the pieces. She says that it is best to make sure the paint is rather dry so that it doesn't run on the tile.
When the design is complete, place the piece or tile into the oven at 325 degrees for 30 minutes to ensure that the paint will adhere properly and be dishwasher safe. If the item is too large for the oven, or you're stenciling wall tiles, hold an industrial heating gun close to the design to "bake" it.
