Project designed by Rosemary Pierce-Carsello.
Materials:
paper mache box large enough for 7" stencil
Darling Daisy Wreath theorem stencil kit - #ATC212
Darling Daisy theorem stencil kit - #ATC211
masking tape
oil or acrylic paints in Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow Hue and Oxide of Chromium
chalk pastels
stencil brushes
paper towels
acrylic sealer
nail
grommets
optional items - fabric for box interior, batting, tacky glue, satin ribbon, gifts
optional - Theorem Painting: An Instructional Video for Beginners featuring "Winter Heart Wreath"
Steps:
1. Paint the exterior of the box and top in any desired color. Use as many coats as needed to completely cover. Let dry.
2. Use masking tape to adhere the stencil to the box.
3. Fill in the stencil with paint by dabbing the brush in the paint, then removing the excess using a paper towel. If using chalk pastels, gently tap off the excess.
4. Apply color to the stencil by working from the outer edge of the stencil moving inward.
5. Repeat until all of the images have been applied to the box.
6. Coat the painted surfaces with an acrylic sealer and let dry.
7. Using a sharp nail, carefully poke a hole on each side of the box, approximately 1/2" below the box top.
8. Insert the grommet pieces on each side and hammer them into place.
9. Place the box top on the box, and tie it into place with ribbon.
10. Protect the paint and stencil design by applying two light coats of spray acrylic sealer.
Finishing the inside of the box
You can also finish the inside of the box using fabric to give it a more tailored look.
Materials:
cloth measuring tape
fabric
cardstock or poster board
quilt batting
scissors
glue
Steps:
1. Extend the exterior paint around the edges and down the first inch inside the box. Paint the inside rim of the box lid.
2. Using a cloth measuring tape, measure the circumference around the outside of the box and the height inside the box.
3. Cut a piece of cardstock or poster board equal to the measurements found in step 2. Cut the slightly longer than the circumference measurement if you want the ends of the finishing piece to overlap.
4. Cut a piece of quilt batting equal to the size of the cardstock/poster board from step 3.
5. Cut a piece of fabric one inch wider and longer than the cardstock/poster board.
6. Position the fabric right side down on a flat surface. Center the batting on top of the fabric then center the cardstock/poster board on top of the batting.
7. Fold the edges of the fabric onto the cardstock/poster board and glue to secure. Allow glue to dry then position the padded piece inside the box along the sides. Glue padded finished piece to the inside of the box.
8. Repeat the process to make top and bottom finished pieces for the box.
