Craft expert Jan Forbes provides rubber-stamping tips and instructions for creating a card with stamps.

Butterfly Card

Materials:

variety of sizes, shapes car stock
rubber stamp of choice
ink pad in color of choice
watercolor markers
glitter glue
shadow ink
glue
ribbon
envelope

Steps:

  1. Apply stamp of choice to card stock.

  2. Color the stamp with watercolor markers.

  3. Add glitter glue (should normally be done at the end of the project).

  4. Stamp a slightly larger, colored piece of card stock with another stamp, using shadow-ink in the color of your choice.

  5. Glue the smaller piece of stock containing the original stamp to the slightly larger piece.

  6. Fold a larger piece of card stock in half to make a greeting card and stamp with shadow ink on the front of it.

  7. Tie a ribbon around the length of the card.

  8. Stamp the envelope with the same stamp and design as the original for continuity.

Tips

  • The type of materials you will need to get started are a variety of stamps and ink pad colors, fillers such as watercolor markers, glitter glue, chalk, crayons and tissue paper.

  • The type of ink you need depends a lot on what you are going to be stamping. For example, if children are going to be working with you, you should use nontoxic, washable ink, fabric ink, acid-free ink and even rainbows of ink all in one pad. If you are just making cards or gift tags the washable type work fine.

  • There are no mistakes in stamping. Any mistake can be fixed.

  • If you get ink in a spot where you really don't want it, use that same stamp and stamp all over the piece of paper. Stamp a little lighter in some areas and darker in others for a creative visual effect.

  • To fix a smear or if you change your mind about using a certain stamp, but you want to keep the same piece of paper, just cut a different piece that is large enough to cover the mistake. Use the new piece for stamping.

  • Use various items from around your home to create texture in the background. One way to achieve this is to crumple a piece of tissue paper, then dab on the ink.

  • Apply stamp(s) onto card stock to present as a gift or greeting.
