Don't throw those old pillows away! Offray Ribbon Company representative Ellie Schneider shows you how even "pooped" pillows can be revitalized with ribbon, fabric and a little imagination.

Materials:

2-1/2 yards each of 5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon in three colors (designated in instructions and pattern by A, B, C)
2-1/2 yards each of 1-1/2" wide ribbon in three patterns (designated in instructions and pattern by D, E, F)
4 yards of 7/8" wide grosgrain ribbon
1 yard of moire fabric (45" width)5/8 yard batting (at least 45" width)
5/8 yard interfacing (at least 45" width)
14" square pillow form
pattern (figure A)

Steps:

1. Cut two 19" squares and one 14" square out of your fabric.

2. Cut one 19" and one 14" square from the batting.

3. Cut one 19" square from the interfacing.

4. Baste the 19" square of interfacing to the wrong side of one 19" square of fabric . Draw a border around all four sides of the square, 3 1/2" from each edge. Later in the project, you will weave ribbons into this border area.

5. Lightly draw a diagonal line from the fabric square's right upper corner to its left lower corner.

6. Beginning with the first 5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon (A), pin a ribbon length directly over the line on one corner, extending it 1/2" outside of pillow corner and 1/2" outside the border marking (figure B).

7. Pin this ribbon (A) in place (figure C) and repeat for the opposite corner.

8. Lay lengths of ribbon (D) along one side of the grosgrain ribbon, leaving 1 /4" between the ribbons and again extending the ribbons 1/2" outside and inside of the border. Repeat with remaining ribbons (B, E, C, then F), continuing in the color , pattern, color, etc. order. Pin the lengths of ribbons diagonally across the border , adjusting the space between the ribbons so the gaps are all equal.

9. In the border, weave a second ribbon layer over and under the first layer, alternating patterns and colors as above, to achieve a basic weave. Continue this process until the entire border is covered with woven ribbons.

10. Anchor ribbons by basting around all edges and then trim the excess (figure D).

11. Baste the 19" square of batting to the remaining 19" fabric square, then trim your batting within the seam allowance. Next, put the wrong sides of the 19" fabric squares together and baste them along the outside edges.

12. Press the 7/8" grosgrain ribbon in half lengthwise to form an edge binding . Then machine or hand hem 3/8" on one raw edge of the grosgrain and press the fold .

13. Beginning with the 14" square, bind all four edges with the folded 7/8" grosgrain ribbon. Stitch the folded ribbon "hem" in place, mitering at corners. In the same manner, bind the outside raw edges of 19" square with the remaining folded grosgrain .

14. Center the 14" square on top of the 19" square, making sure to cover all the raw ribbon edges. Topstitch the 14" square into place just inside of the binding , makng sure an opening is left for inserting the pillow. Stich opening closed.

Cinched Inset Pillow

Materials:

1-1/4 yards each of 1-1/2" wide ribbon in five coordinating patterns
1/2 yard fabric (45" width)
16" x 16" pillow form
1-1/2 yards cord

Steps:

1. First, cut two fabric rectangles, 10" x 17" for the pillow centers, two 8" x 17" fabric strips for the ribbon sides, and one 4" x 17" fabric strip for the ribbon center knot. From each of the five ribbons you have selected, cut four 8" pieces and two 4" pieces.

2. Placing the ribbons horizontally across the width of the fabric strips, stitch ribbon lengths to each 8" x 17" fabric strip, and the 4" x 17" center knot strip .

3. On the wrong side of the 8" x 17" strips, draw a line lengthwise through the middle of each strip. Cut along these lines to make four 4" x 17" strips.

4. Place the right sides together and match the lengths of the fabric. Stitch one ribbon strip to either side of the 10" by 17" fabric panels to form two 17" squares for the pillow front and back (figure E).

5. With right sides together, stitch the fabric front to the back piece, leaving an opening for turning and inserting your pillow. Trim up the seams and corners, turn it right side out, and insert pillow. Slipstitch the opening closed.

6. Fold the remaining 4" x 17" strip in half, and stitch a 1/2" seam down its length to form a tube. Turn right side out and press the strip lengthwise to produce a 1-1/2" x 17" tube.

7. Cinch pillow in the center with cording and knot it. Cover the cord with the ribbon tubing you created, and slipstitch the ends together to complete the project.
