Guest Helen Gibb designed and demonstrated this project.
Materials:
54" x 12" scarf or fabric to make one
22" each of nine assorted 1/4" to 5/8 " wide ribbons*
44" of claret Hanah bias silk cording
six 6-1/2" lengths of wine sheer ribbon for rosettes (39" total)
ten 3" lengths of 5/8" wide burgundy velvet stripe ribbon for leaves (30" t
otal)
8 faceted garnet beads
black thread
needle
scissors
ruler
*Cut each ribbon into four 5-1/2" pieces. This amount of ribbon makes one chrysanthemum. Double this quantity if making two chrysanthemums.
Make A Chrysanthemum
1. Tie a knot in the center of each 5-1/2-inch piece of ribbon. Keep each pile of knotted ribbon strips together. Arrange ribbon piles in a pleasing order by color (figure A).
2. Fold one piece of ribbon from the first pile into a loop. Double a 40-inch-length of thread and secure the thread into the ribbon with several backstitches so it doesn 't pull out (figure B). Sew the raw edges of the ribbon together with two tiny running stitches.
3. Take another piece of ribbon from the next pile. Fold it into a loop as before and stitch the top of this one; then slide it along the thread next to the first loop (figure C). Repeat this step until you have sewn one of each of the nine ribbons onto the thread.
4. Repeat Step 1 three more times until all the ribbon strips have been used.
5. Gather the ribbon loops to about 6 inches and secure the last stitch/gathering (figure D).
6. Evenly roll the ribbon loops tightly on themselves, stitching the base of the ribbons as you go. This coil of loops must be secure or the center will pop up (figure E).
7. Stitch the chrysanthemum to the scarf.
Decorate The Scarf
1. Make a point at both ends of the scarf and secure with stitches.
2. Arrange 22 inches of silk cording in a vine manner up one side of the scarf . Repeat for the other side and tack to scarf with stitches.
3. Make six sheer rosettes (figure F). Stitch a garnet bead to the center of each. Stitch three rosettes on each side of the scarf.
4. Make 10 half-boat leaves (figure G). Sew five leaves along the vine on each side of the scarf.
5. Embellish with other beads as desired.
