Materials:
scissors
size 8 pearl cotton thread
safety pin
size 10 twisted wire needles
size 6 rocaille or seed beads in two colors
fabric for lining
hook and loop tape, snaps or zipper for lining closure
Steps:
1. Weave a cross-thread band containing 72 rungs. Each rung is three beads wide (figure A). Join the last rung to the first rung. Weave in the ends of the thread and clip off the excess.
2. Cut a length of thread about 36 inches long and tie a slip knot in one end. Place the bar of a safetly pin in the slip knot and tighten the knot onto the bar before closing the pin.
3. Pass a needle and thread through the first rung so that the safety pin acts as a stopper. String 83 beads in a row from the cross-thread band at the top downward. Arrange the beads alternating three of one color and one of a contrasting color as shown in figure B. End the strand with a group of three of one color.
4. Connect through the fifteenth contrast bead, working up the column toward the cross thread band and add seven beads (arranged as three of one color and one of a contrast color) before connecting through the thirteenth contrast bead. Continue adding new beads and connecting into contrast beads all the way up the column (figure C) before sliding the needle through the second rung.
5. Add clover beadwork at the top of the cross-thread band to act as a stopper. Move down the fourth rung, adding new beads and connecting into contrast beads until the cross-thread band is completely filled. Release the safety pin and slip out the knot before joining the ending thread to the beginning thread with a square knot. Weave in the ends of the thread and clip off the excess.
6. Make a pillow case-type lining and attach it to the cross-thread band by stitching through the rungs. Fasten snaps, hook and loop or a zipper for the closure.
7. Attach a shoulder strap through rungs 72 and 36.
