Carol demonstrates a knitting method that produces a closed tube which is perfect for creating toboggan style hats and scarves. This technique is very similar to the standard knit and purl method.
Begin by casting on an even number of stitches (Carol used a size 10 needle and 40 stitches for her demonstration). Knit the first stitch and bring the yarn to the front as if to purl but slip the second stitch. Continue across the row in this manner, ending with a slip stitch. Cast off in the conventional manner, knitting the knit stitches and purling (almost) the stitches in between. Be careful when first starting this kind of knitting because the tendency will be to purl; however, to accomplish the closed tube, make certain to slip the stitches. Make the tube as long as you like. Longer tubes can be used as hat/scarf combinations.
