Balloon Shades

Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-122 -- More Projects »
A balloon shade might look intimidating but you can make one that is quite manageable.

Material:
4-5/8 yards lining fabric
one continental rod
one cord cleat
gosling loop shade tape discontinued - use any loop shade tape
three screw eyes

Steps:

  1. Measure the window.
  2. Cut two 39-1/2-inch pieces wide by 82-1/2-inch long fabric.
  3. Cut two pieces of 36-1/2-inch wide by 82-1/2-inch long lining.
  4. Seam two pieces of fabric together; then, seam the lining together.
  5. Pin lining and fabric right sides together with the decorator fabric larger in the middle. Sew the fabric and the lining together, going down one side and up the other. Sew a 1/2-inch seam.
  6. Match up the center seams, with the decorator fabric overlapping the back. Iron the side seams so that they go in one direction toward the lining.
  7. Now, sew the bottom seam of the balloon shade.
  8. Turn the fabric right side out.
  9. Now create three pleats. Mark the center one 8 inches away on each side of the center pleat. Fold it over on each side to create an inverted pleat and pin it 3 inches down from the top. For side pleats, measure 11 inches over and fold a single pleat on each side and pin it 3 inches down.
  10. Run a machine-basting line along the top of the balloon shade.
  11. Sew along the width of the balloon shade 3 inches down from the top, securing pleats.
  12. Fold the top of the balloon shade under 3 inches with the decorator fabric on top.
  13. Sew across the bottom of the fold creating a 3-inch casing for the curtain rod.
  14. Sew the gosling tape 1/2 inch up from the bottom across the back of the balloon curtain. Sew on each side, making sure you don't sew over each of the loops.
  15. Place gosling tape at 3-5-inch intervals up the balloon shade. You must have the loops line up evenly down the shade.
  16. Cut three different lengths of one cord, long, medium, and short.
  17. Thread cord through the rows of gosling tape. Tie a knot, securing the cord to the bottom loop on each row. Start with long then medium, then short, attach the drapery hardware and slide the rod through the shade casing.
  18. Position the screw eyes inline with gosling loops.
  19. Thread the loop cord through the first screw eye, going across through the second and third screw eyes.
  20. Thread the medium cord through the second and third screw eyes.
  21. Thread the shortest cord through the third screw eye. Tie the cords together.
  22. Pull the cords to get the balloon effect and adjust the pleats to pout the shade.
