From Creative Publishing, Michael Basler shows how to easily create a sunburst curtain to fit the top arch window of a door.
Materials:
sheer drapery fabric for curtain and rosette
3/8" flexible plastic tubing, cut to fit curve at inside edge of window frame
sockets for 3/8" round rod
1" cup hooks (one for every 8" to 10" around curve of window, plus one for center of sunburst)
nylon drapery cord, binder clips or clamps
Steps:
- Trace the shape of the inside window frame onto paper to make a pattern. Fitting adjustments can be made on the curtain before it's installed with this.
- Seam fabric widths, if necessary. Press under B= inch twice at sides; stitch to make double-fold hems. Press under 1-1/2 inch twice at upper edge; stitch rod pocket close to first fold, then one inch away. Press under and stitch double B=-inch rod pocket on lower edge.
- Tie safety pin to one end of drapery cord; thread through casing at lower edge. Pull up cord as tightly as possible, tie ends together and trim excess cord. This becomes the sunburst's center.
- Insert plastic tubing into casing at upper edge, gathering fabric. Pin or tape paper pattern to heavy cardboard or foam core board. Aligning heading of curtain to marked arc on pattern, clamp ends of tubing to cardboard; distribute gathers evenly and pin heading in place. Clamp center at lower edge.
- Pull curtain taut toward center to remove slack, using double strands of thread. Cover center with a small half-circle of matching fabric, if necessary for neater appearance on outside of window treatment.
- Screw sockets at ends of button window frame. Screw cup hooks into window frame at eight- to 10-inch intervals around arch, with hook openings facing into the room; position all cup hooks the same distance from edge of window frame. Screw one cup hook at center of bottom window frame.
- Insert ends of tubing into sockets. Snap tubing into cup hooks around inside curve of window. Hook center of sunburst into cup hook at center of bottom window frame. It may be necessary to trim tubing to fit around window.
