Receiving blankets and hooded towels can be made large enough to accommodate the growth of the child. Choose soft, warm and absorbent woven or knit fabrics. Select from flannel, interlock, jersey, thermal knit, terry cloth and stretch terry. Two layers of lightweight fabric can be used with wrong sides together. Round all corners for easy edge application.
Materials:
one yard of 45"- or 60"-wide fabric
Note: when using 45" wide fabric, the mock binding and hood require an additional 1/4 yard.
Use terry cloth for the towel and jersey or thermal knit for the blanket.
Steps:
Cut Fabric
- Cut a 36" square blanket or towel from 1 yard of 45"- or 60"-wide fabric.
- Cut a 1-1/2" wide binding strip on the lengthwise or crosswise grain of the fabric, 2" longer than the distance around the item. Piece fabric together as necessary.
- Press binding in half, with wrong sides together.
Finish Edges With a Mock Binding
- Use an overedge stitch or a serger to attach binding to the right side of fabric, starting 1-1/2" from end of binding. Stitch to within 2" of start of binding, stretching fabric slightly at corners. Do not stretch binding. Note: If serger flatlock stitch is used, stitch wrong sides together.
- Fold 1" of binding to inside; lap around first end of binding. Continue stitching binding to fabric, stitching over previous stitches for 1" to secure the ends.
- Turn seam allowance toward blanket or towel and topstitch through all layers of the seam. This will hold seam allowances flat. If flatlock stitch is used, pull binding and fabric flat.
Towel Hood
- Cut a right triangle with two 12" sides from matching or contrasting fabric. Round the right angle corner and finish diagonal edge with mock binding.
- Position wrong side of the hood to right side of the towel. Stitch triangle to one rounded corner of towel, 1/4" away from matched edges. Finish outside edge.
