Baby's Room

Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-107 -- More Projects »
Having a baby can be expensive. Here's how to get the look you want for your baby room without spending a lot of money. There are so many patterns available. Decide on a theme and build your room around it.

Dust Ruffle:

Materials:
4 yards of 45-inch fabric
pattern
packaging string

Steps:

  1. Cut the fabric from the pattern.
  2. Sew the seams together.
  3. For the side hems, fold the edge over 1/4 inch and iron it. Then, fold it over another 1/4 inch and iron it. Repeat those steps for the bottom hem. Sew all the hems together.
  4. When sewing for ruffles, use the biggest and longest zigzag possible. First, position a long length of string around the edge where the ruffles should be, then zigzag-stitch on top of the string.
  5. Pin each end of the ruffle onto the deck of the baby crib liner. Then, pull the string to create the ruffles.
  6. Pin the dust ruffle to the liner in a couple of spots and sew the pieces together.

Crib Bumpers:

Materials:
4-3/8 yards of 45-inch fabric
4 yards batting
1-1/2 yards snap tape
pattern

Steps:

  1. Cut the fabric and batting according to the pattern.
  2. Pin the bumper fabric to the batting at the topstitching area. This keeps the batting from sliding around in the laundry.
  3. Sew topstitching lines, using longer stitches. Then, taking two pieces of the bumper, put the right sides of the fabric together and sew.
  4. Trim excess batting along the seam.
  5. Add the ruffle and sew pieces together.
  6. Add snap tape to the ties of the pattern.
  7. Sew the ties according to pattern and sew snap tape onto the ties.
  8. Pin ties to the bumper and lay top fabric of the bumper.
  9. Sew these pieces together, leaving one seam unsewn. Turn the fabric right side out and hand-stitch the opened seam.

Quick Baby's Quilt:

  1. Buy two identically sized squares of pre-quilted fabric and purchased ready-made ruffles.
  2. Pin the ruffle to edge of quilted fabric.
  3. Position and pin the second square piece of quilted fabric to the first square, right sides out, along the finished seam of the ruffle and stitch.
