Make a Scarf

Sew Perfect : Episode SEW-110 -- More Projects »
Don't dare leave the house this winter without a scarf! Scarves not only help shield us from the cold, but by choosing different textures and colors of fabric you can make one to go with your winter coat or favorite formal attire.

Scarves should be light and airy and hang nicely on you. To ensure that you get the right kind of fabric, drape it over you in the store. You'll know if it will work for a scarf. For example, metallics work well, but stay away from organza - it wrinkles and is too stiff for a scarf. Most scarves are made with about 1-3/4 to 2 yards of fabric folded lengthwise and sewn with a good 70/10 needle.

There are several seam finishes for scarves, including fringe (figure A), handroll (figure B) and using a serger. Since scarf fabric is light you may have problems feeding it through the machine. To help, place the needle in the left position for more control and pull tight on the fabric as it goes through the machine, so there will be no puckering (figure C).

An extra bonus to decorating scarves is to use fabric paints (figure D), are available at most craft stores. Be sure to practice your artwork on a scrap piece of fabric before doing it on the actual piece, since some fabrics are more absorbent than others. Otherwise, have fun painting or even stenciling your favorite designs on a scarf.

Sequins are also great to decorate a scarf (figure E). You can either glue these on or sew them. Just be sure to hand-wash the fabric in a mild detergent.
