Sewing Caddy

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-233 -- More Projects »
Guest Jean Wells teaches how to make a sewing caddy using straight stitching and fusibles. This caddy hangs on the wall like a quilt, but has pockets to store sewing supplies all in one place.

Basic Instructions:
  1. Determine how much fabric is required and the sizes of various pockets by laying the sewing tools (such as a ruler and scissors) on the fabric. Jean started with 1-1/4 yard of fabric for the background, 1-1/4 for pockets, and 1/2 to 5/8 yards of scraps.
  2. Create a pin cushion on your caddy.
  3. If desired, create a place to hold several spools of thread by stitching an elastic strip to a strip of fabric. Sew the fabric to the backing so that the elastic holds the spools in place.
  4. Use batting in the fabric backing and on the pockets to give the caddy more body.
  5. Use the 'buttonhole' stitch, also known as the 'blanket stitch' to attach the pockets to the background. Paper-backed adhesive may be used instead.
  6. To attach buttons, sew them separately and knot each in the back, or use a glue gun.

* Jean's tip for turning the pockets. Use a chopstick!
