Materials:

Caron Wintuk 4, Art. 1244 (3 1/2 oz. skein); a yarn made of 100 percent Monsanto Acrylic Fiber
1 skein #5 Christmas Red
1 skein #72 Grey
Knitting needles, #6 and #10, or size required to knit to gauge
Crochet hook, size F
Scrap cotton yarn, about 3 yds

Size: Directions are given for small (toddler) hat. Changes for medium (child) and large (adult) are given in parentheses.

Gauge: 7sts = 2" (No. 10 needles)

Notes: Hat is made in Double Knitting, which produces a tube of knitting with knit stitches visible on both sides of work. When working Double Knitting, 2 rows = 1 rnd. When working this technique, slip all stitches as to purl.

Hat:
With crochet hook and scrap cotton yarn, ch 60 (70-80). (Note: One side of ch is smooth, while the other side has tiny bumps; work on side with small bumps.) With #6 knitting needles and Christmas Red, k 1 st in each bump across crochet ch until there are 60 (70-80) sts on needle.

Row 1, Part A: Change to No. 10 needles. * K 1, bring yarn to front sl 1 as to p, bring yarn to back; repeat from * across.

Row 1, Part B: Repeat Row 1, Part A (Parts A and B = 1 rnd Double Knitting). Continue to repeat Row 1, Parts A and B until 7 1/2" (8" to 8 1/2") from beg.

** Fair Isle Pattern: Row 1, Part A and B: * K I Christmas Red, sl 1 Red, k 1 Grey, sl 1 Grey; repeat from across both sides. (Note: When working sl sts, bring both colors to front; when working k sts, bring both colors to back.)

Row 2, Parts A and B: Repeat Fair Isle Pattern, Row 1, Parts A and B.

Rows 3 and 4: With Grey, repeat Hat, Row 1, Parts A and B. (Note: "Hat" refers to earlier, solid color pattern; "Fair Isle" refers to multi-color rows.)

Rows 5 and 6: Repeat Fair Isle Pattern, Row 1, Parts A and B.

Next 5 (5-6) Rows: With Christmas Red, repeat Hat, Row 1, Parts A and B. Repeat from ** once more, then repeat Fair Isle Pattern, Rows 1 through 4. At end of last row, do not cut yarn.

Finishing:
Holding 2 empty knitting needles parallel, separate sts to these 2 needles-sl sts on back needle, k sts on front needle. Fasten off Red, cut Grey leaving a 25" length and thread length in yarn needle.

Kitchener Stitch: Step 1: Working on front knitting needle, bring yarn from back needle and insert yarn needle through first stitch as to purl; leave stitch on needle.

Step 2: Working on back knitting needle, bring yarn needle from front needle to first stitch on back and draw through st as to knit; leave stitch on needle.

Step 3: Working on front needle, sew through first stitch as to knit and slip off needle; sew through next stitch as to purl and leave this stitch on needle.

Step 4: Working from back needle, sew through first stitch as to purl and slip from needle; sew through next st as to knit and leave stitch on needle. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked off.

Finishing: Carefully remove scrap cotton yarn from starting edge.
