Photo Corners
Materials:
Paper Pizazz paper:
- collage background paper (from the book Collage Papers)
- golden, tan, rose vellums (Pastel Vellum Papers)
- metallic gold (Metallic Papers, also available by the sheet)
- pale yellow (Plain Pastels)
pencil
ruler
scissors
gold pen
acid-free adhesive
scrap paper
Steps:
1. Cut the following strips of vellum:
- golden vellum: one 4" x 11" piece
- tan vellum: one 6.5" x 9" piece; four, two-inch squares
- rose vellum: one 2" x 11" strip; one 6.5" x 6" piece, Use the ruler and the gold pen to doodle a border around the edge of the 2" x 11" strip.
2. Crop and mat the photo, first placing it on metallic gold, then on pale yellow. To make the vellum waterfall folded photo corners, start with one of the tan, two-inch vellum squares. Fold the square in half, then in half again, making it a one-inch square. Turn the folded piece so the open corner is at the top. Fold the layers down one at a time, folding each point a little shorter than the previous one (figure A). Repeat with the other tan vellum squares. Place a piece of scrap paper underneath the top layer of the waterfall fold and edge with the gold pen (figure B).
3. Place the 2" x 11" strip of rose vellum on the collage background paper, placing the left edge of the strip about 1-1/4 inches from the left side of the paper. Place the golden vellum strip across the center of the page. Offset the tan vellum piece in the center of the page then layer the remaining rose piece on top, slightly tilted. Add the matted photo on top (figure C).
Tips:
- The vellum waterfall fold is a lovely page embellishment--and very easy to do. Use them as photo corners or as accents on journaling plaques. Make them from vellum or patterned papers. You can also make the fold larger; just be sure to start with a square shape (figure D).
- Pretty, elegant collage motifs are showing up a lot lately. Why not bring this delicate look to photo albums? A variety of vellum papers is a no-fail collage necessity. Try tearing the vellum and layering it with patterned papers for a different look (figure E).
Lattice Page
Materials:
Paper Pizazz paper:
- yellow roses, tone on tone diamonds (from the book Soft Florals & Patterns)
- green vellum (Pastel Vellum Papers)
- metallic gold (Metallic Papers, also available by the sheet)
- pale yellow (Plain Pastels Butterfly cut-outs: Paper Pizazz Vellum Cut-Outs)
craft knife and cutting mat
pencil
ruler
scissors
gold pen
acid-free adhesive
Steps:
1. Trim diamond paper so the first row on the left side is dark yellow diamonds.
2. Optional: Cut one, 14-inch strip of pale yellow paper. Glue it to the back of the yellow diamonds paper, keeping the strip even with the side and top left corner.
3. Beginning in the top corner, cut a 1-3/8-inch diagonal. If you follow the diamond pattern, you'll cut alongside four diamonds--two light and two dark. Repeat for each row of diamonds until you have made 16 cuts in all, resulting in 15 strips (figure F).
4. Staring with the top strip, fold every other strip down, lining up the end of the strip with the outside edge of the page. The first strip onto the fourth strip, third strip onto the sixth strip, etc. Continue with this pattern until you have folded the fifteenth strip (figure G).
5. Trim the top of the diamond paper even with the first fold (you'll be cutting through the center of the dark diamond row). Trim the bottom to match the top--leaving your last strip hanging like a tail. Your finished height will be about nine inches. Trim the right edge to make the finished width eight inches. Glue the strips down (figure H).
6. Trim and mat photo on pale yellow, then mat again on metallic gold. Glue the matted photos to the center of the lattice mat.
7. Place the green vellum on the yellow roses background sheet about 3/4 inch from the left edge of the page and 1/2 inch from the top and bottom edge. Glue in the center--don't apply glue to the outer edges of the vellum.
8. Glue the matted photo to the green vellum, leaving a one-inch border on top, bottom and left edges. The diamond paper will overlap onto the roses.
9. Cut out a pale yellow heart and mat it on gold. Journal on the heart with gold pen and glue to the lower right corner.
10. Cut out vellum butterflies and glue bodies only to the page as shown. Gently fold up the wings.
Tips:
- Mixing and matching patterned papers is easy when you combine patterns that share a similar color. Here, the roses and diamond papers are both predominantly yellow. The soft green vellum picks up the green in the rose paper and provides a nice "space" between the two patterns.
- How to avoid glue showing through your vellum paper? Use a stick adhesive, and apply it sparingly! Also note how we applied the glue only to the center of the green vellum sheet, where it would be hidden under the matted photo. The painted vellum butterflies have enough color on them to disguise the adhesive.
- This layout is perfect for highlighting special photos, like this wedding picture. Don't be afraid to place one great photo on a single page--even a 12" x 12" page. It makes the photo the focal of the page, while allowing you plenty of room to play!
